What to Bring to a Summer Cookout

I think it is safe to say that we are now officially in cookout season, and I couldn't be happier about it. There is nothing better than getting together with a group of friends for a backyard cookout. Burgers, hotdogs, good music and my favorite people. Maybe even a pool? I’m there.

While the grill usually gets all the attention, I think that the sides might just be one of my favorite parts of the meal. But oftentimes, classic cookout sides like coleslaw, mac and cheese, and even salads aren't dishes that everyone can eat. Coleslaw is usually made with mayonnaise (which contains eggs),  mac & cheese has both gluten and dairy, and salads have nuts!

But, just because these classic sides are traditionally made with ingredients that some people have to avoid because of allergies or dietary restrictions, doesn't mean that they have to miss out! There are so many easy swaps and allergy-friendly versions that taste just as good as the originals. So whether you are attending a Fourth of July barbecue or hosting a backyard cookout, these allergy-friendly recipes are sure to be a hit!

Allergy-Friendly Cookout Recipes

Greek Yogurt Coleslaw

Traditional coleslaw is made with mayonnaise, which contains eggs. I love this Greek Yogurt Coleslaw from Kelly Jensen at the Herbivore. It swaps the mayo for greek yogurt, making it egg free but also adds some protein! If you want to make it dairy free too, Tezza has a greek yogurt made from soy milk.

Gluten Free Mac & Cheese

Mac & Cheese is a cookout staple, but it is usually full of gluten and dairy. This recipe from Dana Shultz and Minimalist Baker is both gluten and dairy free. And somehow still has that creamy texture that we all love. It is a perfect recipe for our GFDF friends.

Nut-Free Summer Salad

Sometimes the simplest recipes are the best. My mom taught me that salads don't have to be boring. Instead of just lettuce and dressing, she always elevates a salad by adding color and crunchy toppings that don't just taste good but make it look beautiful too. This summer salad is one of my favorites:

Toss everything together with Primal Kitchen Avocado Oil & Vinegar Vinaigrette, it really is that simple!

I hope you find some inspiration from these recipes. Happy cookout season!
