Free Ways to Beat the Summer Heat

There is a specific kind of summer heat that makes you rethink every plan you made for the day. Yesterday, I walked out of my house on my way to meet a friend, and within 30 seconds I was sweating, annoyed, and thinking about the fact that I was probably going to need my third shower of the day.

You know the feeling. You leave, excited to get your day going, and moments later, you're sweating, annoyed, and wondering why you even left the house in the first place. Even though it may feel tempting to just stay home until September, there are some great summer activities that help you stay cool and don't cost any money.

Here are a few free ways to beat the summer heat:

1) Visit a Local Museum

Museums are one of the easiest ways to get out of the sun. They are air conditioned and calm. The VMFA has something for everyone.  There is an incredible selection of art that you could admire for hours, but they also put on weekly events. If you are into live music, they have a rotation of bands and jazz performances that are free to the public.

2) Find a Splash Pad

Splash pads are the perfect thing for kids on a hot day. They even tend to be less stressful than committing to a full day at the pool. The Stony Point Pop Jet Fountain was a regular stop for my family when I was younger. It was just the right thing to cool off.

3) Sunrise or Sunset Outing

Instead of forcing a midday activity, let's normalize shifting plans to the morning or evening! The temperature tends to be so much more manageable at these hours of the day, when the sun is not taking center stage in the sky. Go for a walk with a friend in the morning or plan a picnic for sunset!

4) DIY Movie Theatre

If getting out of the house feels too ambitious some days, bring the movie theatre experience right to your living room! Close the blinds, grab your favorite spot on the couch, and turn on your favorite movie. Pro tip: upgrade your popcorn by adding either Maple Cinnamon or Rosemary Sea Salt Absurd Snacks to the bowl. This will add some extra crunch and plant-based protein.

This summer heat can be intense, but it does not have to ruin the fun. With a cool place to escape and a crunchy snack nearby, you can still enjoy your summer without spending money or melting in the process!
