With the holiday season in full swing and Black Friday deals at big box stores looming this week, we know it can be tempting to grab the biggest discount, or the cheapest item. You may not know this, but this Saturday, November 30, is Small Business Saturday. It’s the perfect reminder to think beyond the big box stores. 

Supporting small businesses is more than just a purchase: it’s an investment in the community and the PEOPLE behind them. If that’s not enough, here are three reasons why shopping small can make a big difference:

1. Local businesses reinvest in their community. No offense to the Targets and Walmart’s of the world, but neighborhoods thrive when small companies succeed because of the charities and programs they fuel. Forbes cited a study that shared that for every $100 spent at one of these businesses, $68 stays in the community, compared to just $43 when shopping at a national chain.
